Operating Systems

An operating system manages all aspects of the computer for a user. A user cannot communicate directly with the hardware so the OS acts as a bridge.

All operating systems have 4 basic functions:

  • Memory Management
  • Peripheral & hardware device management
  • Task/Processor scheduling
  • The ability to interrupt service routines
Examples of Operating systems are:
  • Microsoft Windows
  • Linux
  • MacOS
